In the fall of 1989, the FDA recalled L-Tryptophan, an amino acid nutritional supplement, stating that it caused a rare and deadly flu-like condition (Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome / EMS). On March 22, 1990, the FDA banned the public sale dietary of L-Tryptophan completely. This ban continues today. On March 26, 1990, "Newsweek" featured a lead article praising the virtues of the anti-depressant drug Prozac. Its multi-color cover displayed a floating, gigantic green and white capsule of Prozac with the caption: "Prozac: A Breakthrough drug for Depression."
This article goes into detail about how our present medical system is mired in politics and profits. While most of us believe that the system should be interested in helping people be as healthy as they can, the facts seem to be quite different.
The system failed us in the case of L-Tryptophan. It is a safe essential amino acid - found in most foods (and all commercial infant formulas). There seems to have been a problem with a small amount of the product - a contaminant in a batch or two. Instead of doing something about the contaminant, we yanked L-Tryptophan from the shelves. It seems a convenient coincidence that a major drug company introduced their new SSRI drug right about the time the "problem" with L-Tryptophan was discovered. It was simply unacceptable that a safe, natural amino acid product would even be mentioned in the same breath with the expensive commercial drug. It was too bad that L-Tryptophan was helping people with mild depression and with sleeping difficulties. With it off the shelves, the demand for the commercial drug skyrocketed.
Our health system is seriously damaged and elected “officials” are scrambling to do something about it. Goof intentions are not enough in this case – and massive legislative changes will surely make matters worse. It serves a few and works to drug the rest of us into an placid state reminiscent of the way people acted in George Orwell's, 1984 when they were fed the government-sponsored soma.
A group in our society that is experiencing great growth in mind-altering drug use is our youth – particularly in response to the diagnosis of that pseudo-condition referred to as ADHD. How in the heck are young people supposed to differentiate between the methylphenidate and fluoxetine their doctors prescribe and the party drugs they get from their friends? Not only do we feed our kids tons of mind-altering drugs, our health system now suggests that some kids as young as two years be tested for cholesterol - and started on 'statin' drugs. There’s another train wreck heading our way.
I want to emphasize that L-Tryptophan IS NOT illegal. Actually, it never has been. It seems that someone was able to scare enough people into fearing L-Tryptophan and almost every manufacturer and supplier stopped selling it. Yet, it remained in good favor with just about every maker of liquid nutritional formulas. You see, it is one of the essential amino acids. Humans cannot make L-Tryptophan in our bodies. We MUST get it from the outside. No nutritional supplement would be effective without L-Tryptophan. It never left the market - it merely went underground. Now it's available again. Furthermore, it meets all the purity tests of the FDA and it is reported safe for human use. Doctors are again recommending L-Tryptophan for treatment of mild depression. Moreover, let's not forget how helpful it is when a person finds it difficult to sleep.
