Probiotics

There so many options.
There is no doubt in my mind that probiotics are important for good health. Some experts emphasize that a majority of our health (or lack of health) originates in our digestive system. That's where our food is broken down and made available to us. The entire digestive tract is a giant factory. The cells in our gut that work on our behalf outnumber our own cells by a large margin. There is a certain balance point at which everything operates best. For the most part, a balanced digestive system is self-regulating. However, it can occasionally be thrown out of balance.

A course of antibiotics can upset things - as is evidenced when we experience cramping and diarrhea while taking an antibiotic. Antibiotics don't discriminate. They aren't smart enough to know they should only destroy the "bad bacteria". Many pharmacists will recommend eating yogurt when taking an antibiotic to help replenish the "good bacteria" the drug is destroying. If there's nothing else available, yogurt is better than nothing. A superior choice would be to take one or two capsules of a quality probiotic product each day while using the antibiotic.

Probiotics are an important supplement - for everyone, everyday. Along with our food, we injest numerous chemicals, which can - and do - upset the important balance in our gut. No, imbalance doesn't always show itself as an upset stomach. Sometimes we can suffer from decreased absorption of important nutrients. I have found that it is best for our health if we take probiotics regularly - as a supplement. They are inexpensive warriors that can protect our overall health.

There are dozens of probiotic products on the market. How can you choose the one that's best? The pharmacists at The Compounder have pondered this question for years, and we are constantly on the lookout for the products that offer the best protection at a most affordable price.

Today, we offer four products. Three of them are probiotic mixtures. The fourth is pure Saccharomyces boulardii, a substance derived from a tropical strain of yeast. There are numerous randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled studies showing the efficacy of Saccharomyces boulardii in the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal disorders.

Florajen 3 product has long been the basis for our recommendations about using a daily dose of probiotic. Our research has demonstrated that Saccharomyces boulardii is a very potent addition to the standard mixtures. This special ingredient is particularly helpful in controlling Clostridium difficile (C. Diff.), especially when given with one of two antibiotics (vancomycin or metronidazole). Using Saccharomyces boulardii was found to significantly reduce the rate of recurrent C. Diff. infection.
