Not every allergic reaction is a simple as those associated with seasonal allergies – runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, and so on. Sometimes, the allergen – the substance that triggers an allergic response – can cause a massive release of chemicals into the blood stream. The reaction is far greater and can even be life-threatening.
Anaphylaxis is a severe, whole-body allergic reaction. After being exposed to a substance like bee sting venom, the person's immune system becomes sensitized to that substance. On a later exposure, an allergic reaction may occur. This reaction is sudden, severe, and involves the whole
There are three major types of substances that can bring on a severe allergic reaction;
- Drugs
- Food
- Insect bites
There are two common approaches to allergy symptoms;
- Avoid the causes.
- Treat with drugs.
In a perfect world, it would be best to completely avoid anything that can cause an allergic response. But how realistic is that? Regardless of the care taken, an allergen can find its way to a sensitive child. A well meaning neighbor can offer a snack that contains something associated with the substance the child is sensitive to. For example, a child who is allergic to corn should not be exposed to soda pops. They contain HFC syrup (high fructose corn syrup). A few sips might be all that’s needed to start the allergic cascade.
Drugs can help, especially when an attack has already begun. Some allergies are so severe that the parent must be always on guard and have steroid injections and antihistamines available at all times. Time is of the essence and waiting too long can be fatal.
One additional approach (number three) is to build the immune system to help the child tolerate and overcome the effects of the allergens. It is possible to use support products that can help strengthen the cells of the body so that they are less likely to rupture and release histamine (the primary cause of allergy symptoms).
In addition to being armed with epinephrine injection and antihistamines, a parent may want to work on strengthening the immune system by using a daily dose of a quality probiotic, like our Florajen 3. Year round, the child can also take a supplement that contains quercetin. Adding more vitamin C every day is also helpful in boosting the strength of the immune system.
Natural D-Hist is a high-quality supplement that contains quercetin, bromelain, NAC, and vitamin C. It works and there are no side effects reported.
The products I mentioned are safe, but no parent would want to start treating their child with serious allergies without first discussing the matter with a qualified doctor.
