FDA and Pharmacy Compounding Print E-mail

The most common thing we hear when we tell people that we work in a compounding pharmacy is, "What's a compounding pharmacy?" The easiest reply is that we make medicine, on orders from a doctor, from scratch, using pure chemicals and ingredient . That is abundantly clear to us, but it still leaves many questions unanswered. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not directly regulate the practice of pharmacy, in general, and they have far less authority than they want, but the existing system has been successfully in place since the very beginning.

Recently, the FDA came to our aid by publishing a video that explains compounding far better than the example cited above. It isn't perfect, but it is very good and it offers a balanced view of what an honest, hard working compounder does.

The video mentions quality and how a good compounder must work to assure that quality. We're proud to announce that we have maintaind quality control and assurance systems for years. We publish a summary of our ongoing test results on our website. Take a look
  • NOTES: A fellow compounder, Mark, Burger, made a few observations about the video that I'd like to share with our readers. From one perspective, the FDA should exhibit a little restraint when implying dangers from compounders.
  • They are in no position to be  CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK.
  • Mark wrote, "We don't compound in the dark like the guy in the video ... also: They don't mention that FDA-Regulated drug manufacturers like Glaxo-Smith-Kline just got fined $750Million for manufacturer contaminated drugs in Puerto Rico ... and that the whistle blower says it's been going on for some time ...
