What is the
Nicotine Lollipop and how might it help me
quit smoking?
The Nicotine Lollipop can help control
cravings by delivering nicotine in a
non-tobacco form. The nicotine is absorbed
directly through the lining in the mouth,
and continues working after you stop using
the lollipop. The Nicotine Lollipop also
offers the hand-to-mouth action that seems
to be an important part of the smoking
habit.
Does the Nicotine Lollipop work like the
gum?
Like Nicorette® gum, the Nicotine Lollipop
provides an alternative source of nicotine
when you are quitting - without exposing the
user to the harmful tars and carbon monoxide
in cigarette smoke. But the actual usage is
different. Each lollipop is meant to be
sucked on and moved from side to side until
it the craving for a cigarette subsides.
With Nicorette®, the chewer uses a specific
technique ("bite and park") instead.
How do nicotine replacement Quit Aids
like the Nicotine Lollipop help me quit
smoking?
Nicotine replacement therapies give your
body lower levels of nicotine. When you
start your smoke-free program, you’re
already addicted to nicotine from
cigarettes. The Nicotine Lollipop contains
nicotine, so as you suck on it, small
amounts of nicotine are released and
absorbed through your mouth tissues. But
because the Nicotine Lollipops don’t contain
the tar or carbon monoxide found in
cigarette smoke, you don’t run the same
health risks as smoking. Then, as you begin
to step down your usage, you gradually wean
your body off nicotine until you use no
nicotine at all.
Is the Nicotine Lollipop stronger than
other stop-smoking Quit Aids, like the gum
or patch?
Studies comparing the lozenge with the gum
or patch haven’t been conducted, though each
can be effective.
When you’re choosing among Nicorette®,
NicoDerm® CQ® or a Nicotine Lollipop, the
best thing you can do is think about your
lifestyle and your habit. For instance, the
patch is low-maintenance because you only
have to apply it once a day, but the
Nicotine Lollipop lets you have more control
over your nicotine intake because you choose
when to take it - and the lollipop gives you
"something to do with your hands."
What does the the Nicotine Lollipop taste
like?
Let’s be honest, the Nicotine Lollipop is
medicine, not candy. But it does have a
flavor. The lollipop also gives off a
warming tingle as it starts to dissolve and
begins releasing medicine.
Where can I buy the Nicotine Lollipop?
You can buy Nicotine Lollipop from a
compounding pharmacy.
Can people who chew tobacco or dip snuff
use Nicotine Lollipop?
No. The Nicotine Lollipop is probably not a
good choice for treating chewing tobacco or
snuff dependence. Also, tobacco products of
any kind should not be used in
conjunction with Nicotine Lollipop.
Are there any side effects to taking the
Nicotine Lollipop?
Nicotine Lollipop is not candy. If you
consume it too fast or chew and swallow all
or part of it, you may experience heartburn
or indigestion. If you experience any side
effects, you should discontinue use and
consult your doctor.
The side effects seen in users are generally
moderate and transient. The most common side
effects are insomnia (reported in less than
5% of users), nausea, hiccups, coughing,
heartburn, headache and flatulence.
What
happens if you accidentally break or bite
the Nicotine Lollipop?
Nothing harmful happens if you accidentally
break or bite the lollipop. You should
continue allowing the bits to dissolve and
avoid chewing
it any further. Chewing and/or biting
followed by swallowing the lozenge will
decrease the uptake absorption of medicine
and may reduce the effectiveness/overall
efficacy of the lollipop - AND you will
loose the hand-to-mouth benefit.
What happens if you accidentally swallow
the Nicotine Lollipop? Does the liver
deactivate the nicotine if the Nicotine
Lollipop is swallowed whole?
The effect of swallowing the lollipop whole
has not been studied. However, less nicotine
may be absorbed than if the lollipop was
allowed to dissolve normally, and some
individuals may experience stomach
disturbances, including nausea, hiccups and
heartburn and/or other side effects.
What do you mean by "minimize
swallowing"?
The Nicotine Lollipop is designed so that as
it dissolves, the nicotine is absorbed in
the lining of your mouth. By minimizing
swallowing as the lollipop dissolves, you
can be assured that you are getting the
proper dose. Swallowing saliva when there is
a natural urge is expected and not harmful.
How long after my last cigarette can I
begin using the Nicotine Lollipop?
We recommend choosing a start date for your
quit attempt and beginning use of the
Nicotine Lollipop first thing that day,
before having any cigarettes. However, if
you choose to wait and start your quit
attempt later in the day, you should wait 30
minutes or longer after smoking your last
cigarette before using your first Nicotine
Lollipop.
After you stop using the lollipop, how
long will it stay in your blood and urine?
Trace amounts of nicotine can be detected in
blood and urine for several hours but should
not be detectable in blood or urine after 48
hours. However, cotinine, which is a
metabolite of nicotine, can be detected in
blood or urine for up to 7-10 days.
I’m worried about gaining weight. Will
the Nicotine Lollipop add calories?
Nicotine Lollipop is sugar-free and the
amount of calories is negligible. So, if you
worry about gaining weight, try to be
conscious about what you eat, choose healthy
snacks to satisfy/occupy your mouth, and
exercise regularly.
Is there gluten in the Nicotine Lollipop
lozenges?
There is no gluten in Nicotine Lollipop.
Can I use
Nicotine Lollipop in combination with other
stop-smoking aids like gum, or the patch?
No.
Is the Nicotine Lollipop safe for
pregnant women?
Smoking can seriously harm a child. If you
are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should
consult your doctor before using any
nicotine product, even the Nicotine
Lollipop. Optimally, you should try and stop
smoking without any form of nicotine
replacement therapy. Risks to children from
nicotine replacement aids are not known at
this time.
Can I get
addicted to Nicotine Lollipop?
If you’re a smoker, you’re already addicted
to nicotine before you start using the
nicotine lozenge. Using the Nicotine
Lollipop as directed and continuing to step
down your use.
