Use: Potassium Citrate will change the acidity of the urine. It is used in the treatment of certain kidney disorders and gout. It may also be used with certain antibiotics to make them more effective. It is also an excellent source of potassium.
Side Effects: Stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, or loose stools may occur the first few days as your the adjusts to the medication. Occasionally, the doctor will order a gradually increasing dose to help avoid the stomach problems. If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform the doctor.
Storage: Keep in the original container. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Capsules and tablets may be stored at room temperature. Some liquids should be stored in the refrigerator (see the prescription label.) Store all medicines away from excess heat and moisture. Do NOT store in the bathroom.
Directions: Potassium Citrate may be dispensed as a capsule or a flavored liquid. Give this medication as prescribed, usually three times a day. Give with meals or within 30 minutes after a meal to reduce stomach upset.
If you miss a dose give it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give a double dose to make up for the missed one.
