(Baytril ® is another name for this medication)
Use: Enrofloxacin is an antibiotic that is useful against a wide variety of infections in animals.
Side Effects: Seizures and kidney damage can occur in animals. The most likely side effects seen in some animals given enrofloxacin are stomach upset, vomiting, and a lack of appetite. Dizziness and hallucinations occur in humans and may also occur in animals. Doses higher than 2.2mg/lb. per day have caused blindness in cats. Enrofloxacin causes hallucinations in people. For this reason, if your animal suffers from any psychotic or obsessive behavior, enrofloxacin may worsen these symptoms.
Precautions: This drug is very bitter and may cause your pet to salivate or refuse treatment. Enrofloxacin should only be used in animals as it causes hallucinations in people. Enrofloxacin should be used very carefully in animals with a history of epilepsy.
Directions: Dogs and cats usually receive this medication orally once or twice daily. Sometimes veterinarians will instruct pet owners to give injections of enrofloxacin under the skin to their pets once or twice daily.
Remember: Some other drugs can interact with this medication so tell your veterinarian about any drugs or foods that you currently give your animal. Do not give new foods or medications without first asking your veterinarian. Any iron, aluminum, dairy or calcium products can inactivate enrofloxacin. Do not give these products 1 hour before or 2 hours after administration of enrofloxacin.
If you miss a dose of this medication you should give it as soon as you remember it, but if it is within a few hours of the regularly scheduled dose, wait and give it at the regular time. Do not double a dose as this can be toxic to your pet.
