SOLUTION DILUTIONS

Here are some suggestions for making dilutions.
Please be aware that these are ONLY suggestions.
Please
check the calculations yourself.
I'm confident in my work, but I cannot
accept liability for anyone who uses these
numbers without first verifying them.

Here's how to calculate the amount of concentrated material to ADD to a volume of Diluent to end up with a diluted concentration.

(BV + x)* E%=B% * x

Solve for x

x=(BV * E%)/(B% - E%)

x is the amount of concentrated solution to be ADDED
BV is the Beginning Volume of the Diluent
E% is the concentration of the final solution
B% is the concentration of the beginning solution

Example: How much 5% solution should you add to 20ml of water to end up with a 0.5% solution?

BV = 20
E% = 0.5%
B% = 5%
x=(20 * 0.5)/(5-0.5)
x= (10)/4.5)
x=2.222

Therefore, add 2.22ml of 5% solution to 20ml of water to end up with 22.22ml of 0.5% solution.
