In addition to fortifying your immune system, take everyday actions to stay healthy, such as covering your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze, washing your hands often, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, which promotes germ spread. A good immune system is very important in avoiding influenza, AND in fighting the “bugs” if you are infected.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a powerful antioxidant that enhances the activity of immune cells and may help to keep infections from spreading. Studies have suggested vitamin C may reduce severity and duration of symptoms due to the common cold virus. Zinc accelerates the growth of immune cells while inhibiting the replication of viruses that cause the common cold. We recommend Buffered C 500mg capsules, 2 capsules one to three times daily – more when symptoms are present.
Our Retail: $14.00 for 90 caps

Vitamin D receptors are found on a number of immune cells, and several studies show that vitamin D plays an important role in the prevention of respiratory infections such as the cold and flu. In a study of over 19,000 participants, research found that people with the lowest vitamin D levels were over 33% more likely to report having a recent upper respiratory tract infection than those with higher levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is the recommended form for supplementation. Vitamin D was once thought to be toxic in high doses. Current research demonstrates that those worries are unfounded.  The recommended daily allowance (RDA ) for vitamin D3 is 400 IU/day, but doses as high as 10,000 IU per day are now considered safe. Vitamin D3 seems to prevent and treat infectious disease. We recommend Vitamin D3 drops by Carlson (1,000 IU per drop), 4,000 to 10,000 IU per day for adults and 400 to 1,000 units per day for children, even infants.
Our Retail: $19.98 for 11ml

Cod Liver Oil is an excellent source of vitamins A, D, and E, plus Omega-3 Fatty Acids. These are important antioxidants that are reported to support the immune system. Adults take 1 to 2 tablespoonfuls per day. Children – even infants – can easily tolerate one teaspoonful. We recommend the Carlson brand. It’s very pure and lemon flavored.
Our Retail: $22.95 for 250ml

Probiotics Several studies tell us that probiotics can also decrease flu and cold symptom intensity even if they don’t always protect people from getting sick. The most recent was published in the August 2009 Journal of Pediatrics.  Clinical research shows children ages 3 to 5 years who attend day-care centers have 45% fewer influenza-like respiratory symptoms when given a specific combination of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and the duration of their symptoms was 2 days shorter. Probiotics improve gut and vaginal health and modulate immune function. We recommend Florajen 3, 1 capsule daily for adults and children, increasing to 2 to 4 when symptoms are present.
Our Retail: $26.95 for 60 capsules

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS). This sugar is found in high amounts in artichokes. It is beneficial because it is beneficial to the health of bifidobacteria – one of the most important of the “good bacteria”. This sugar is safe for diabetics because it has no impact on insulin. We recommend products by Douglas Lab. We make this into capsules and suggest one capsule (or an eighth of a teaspoon of powder) with each probiotic capsule.
Our Retail: $24.95 for 60 capsules

Elderberry has a long history of use for flu and other viruses (like the cold virus). Elderberry extract has been found to reduce both the severity of symptoms and the duration of the flu. A proprietary extract was developed by a virologist in Israel and it became popular after studies demonstrated that it significantly shortened the duration and intensity of flu infections.  Elderberry extracts have a direct antiviral activity on flu virus that is comparable to the antiviral prescription drugs. We recommend Sambucol Cold and Flu Relief Lozenges.
Our Retail: $13.99 for 30 lozenges

Soap & Water (Plain soap, NOT one with disinfectants). It is important to wash our hands regularly, especially when they may have become dirty, and dry with a clean towel (or paper towel). Blotting dry is preferred to vigorous rubbing. Be careful about touching your face. Disease often enters our bodies through the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. We recommend simple soaps, like Ivory. NOTE: Excessive use of the “hand sanitizers” can cause skin irritation. Simple washing is best.

Cough & Sore Throat Syrup Make this at home by mixing equal parts honey and lemon juice. Use small amounts as often as necessary for sore throat relief. This is as good as any commercial sore throat or cough medicine. Keep it on hand and use it the minute you feel the coughing start. Honey is not recommended for children under 12 months.
