SKIN DISORDERS -
VITAMIN B12 CREME FOR ECZEMA

QUESTION: My 2.5 yo niece has been told she has eczema. She mainly gets it on her elbows. It comes and goes, but seems to never be fully gone. Is there something real basic we can give her to prevent flare ups or diminish the redness?

ANSWER: Eczema is an inflammatory condition of the skin characterized by rashes and intense itching with swelling, redness, and blistering. Proteins produced by white blood cells, called cytokines, stimulate certain cells in the body to make nitric oxide, which contributes to the redness and swelling. Traditional treatments for eczema aim to control the symptoms.

It was found that vitamin B12 inhibits production of cytokines and can trap nitric oxide, making it less harmful. One study reported in the British Journal of Dermatology1 investigated the effect of a topical application of a vitamin B12 cream on eczema.  For all participants, the severity of eczema was significantly less when treated with vitamin B12 cream. Both the doctors and the study participants rated the vitamin B12 cream superior to the placebo.

We have been having very good results from a 0.07% vitamin B12 cream. It seems to do a good job reducing irritation and inflammation and itching, just like the study reported. There are no added drugs, fragrances, colors, or preservatives - just vitamin B12 in a smooth cream base. The cream we make is pink (looks like sherbet) but it does not leave a color on the skin. You may want to talk to your local pharmacist about this treatment. I presume that it will be available commercially soon. Until then a compounding pharmacist will have to make it for you.

We have been having very good results from a simple cream of vitamin B12, 0.07% that we prepare in our pharmacy. It  seems to do a great job reducing irritation and inflammation of psoriasis and eczema. There are no drugs, fragrances, colors, or preservatives - just vitamin B12 in a smooth cream base. Our crème is pink (looks like sherbet) but it does not leave a color on the skin.
