High Candy Consumption = Weaker Bones
Bone mineral density was studied in relationship to dietary patterns from the data of the large Framingham Study of Tufts University. It was found that dietary pattern is associated with bone mineral density. High fruit and vegetable intake appeared to be protective in men. High candy consumption was associated with low bone mineral density in both men and women.
Sweet and Unhealthy
Growing evidence links excessive intake of sugar consumption with health risks such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.
Per capita sweetener consumption, which includes sugar, corn sweeteners, honey, maple syrups and other syrups, has increased from 27 teaspoons per day in 1970 to 32 teaspoons in 1996. The increase is largely due to soft drinks and sweetened beverages, by far the greatest source of added sugars in children. Am. Diet Assoc.; March 2002;102(3):351-3.
