Thyroid Function Home Test Print E-mail

I'd venture to guess that a LOT of people have difficulties with their thyroid function (low energy, dry hair, cold extremities) and they rarely look to their iodine levels to see if that may be part of the problem. Doctors can order laboratory tests to determine our levels of iodine. However, we can also do a home test for low iodine. I learned this from Dr. Williams' newsletter. Dr. Williams warns that this test is "...not 100% accurate, but it's easy to do, inexpensive, and works very well as a screening tool."  Here's how to do it.

  1. Dip a cotton swab into TINCTURE OF IODINE
  2. Paint a 2-inch circle of iodine onto a soft area of skin - stomach, inner thigh, inner arm, etc.
  3. Allow this to dry
  4. If the stain remains for more than four hours, it is an INDICATION that your iodine levels may be adequate.
  5. If the stain fades in an hour or two, your body may be lacking iodine. This is what you can share with your doctor.

So, what can you do if you find that your iodine is low?  Some table salts contain iodine as an additive. That's a good place to start. If you take vitamin and mineral supplements make sure there is at least some iodine in it. If you can stomach it, sushi often contains seaweed - and that's a great source of iodine.

If you think your iodine is low - and your doctor concurs - you can also get iodine supplements. One of the more common forms is Lugol's solution - a mixture of iodine and iodine salts. People find that just a few drops a day can dramatically improve iodine levels. Dr. Jonathan Wright suggests Lugol's as part of a treatment for fibrocystic breast disease. Many women have reported that this works.

Lugol's drops taste bad. To combat that problem we found a way to make the liquid drops into a powder - and we pack that into a gelatin capsule. Easy to use and no bad taste. If your doctor orders Lugol's - and you can't stomach the taste - ask about using our iodine capsule instead.

You can also purchase an iodine supplement without a prescription. It's called IODORAL. If you can't find it locally, you can order online from The Compounder.

As always, when people try to mess with the natural way of things - and use toxic chemicals to do it - there is a risk that something can go drastically wrong. In the case of fluorine and chlorine, the results are a depletion of iodine and the subsequent negative effect on our thyroid function. If you suspect your thyroid is operating at a low setting, ask your doctor about this iodine connection before you start taking one of the thyroid replacement drugs. Wouldn't using a natural supplement to replace your low iodine levels be a better idea than drugs? I think so.
