17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate Print E-mail

What Is It?: 17 Alpha-Hydroxyprogesterone Caproate is a form of progesterone that is compounded into an injection. Studies reported in 2003 have shown that it can successfully reduce the risk of preterm delivery.

How To Use: This is an injection. The doctor often administers the shots weekly in his or her office. However, some doctors help their patients learn how to use the prescription at home.

Possible Side Effects: Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone and it is vital for maintaining pregnancy. Side effects are rare and are usually associated with an overdose or irritation at the injection site.

Storage: Keep in the original container. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Capsules and tablets may be stored at room temperature. Some liquids should be stored in the refrigerator (see the prescription label.)  Store all medicines away from excess heat and moisture. Do NOT store in the bathroom.

Note: If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
